Untitled (Somebody, with Sunrise)

Medium: Alcohol Marker, Chalk Pencil and Colored Pencil
Date: 2026
Project/Body of Work: Ongoing Private Illustrated Manuscript Project

A figure stands on a rocky outcropping, walking stick in hand, a dog beside him. Below, the rock face drops away to a river and on into shadow. To the right, a small, stubby tree holds its ground at the edge. Above and to the left, a flock of white birds spirals upward into a sweep of green landscape partially hidden by mist. The light is specific— that golden light that arrives at the edges of things, at the threshold between what is visible and what is felt.

Process Notes:

This sketch for this illustration arrived quickly, resolving almost immediately into the image you see here. A figure at a threshold, looking out into vast space. The dog as companion and witness. The landscape as both setting and presence, signalling the witnessing of something or someone beyond ordinary understanding.

The composition draws on one of the recurring threads of this project, the solitary figure in relationship to that something beyond—not necessarily supernatural, but not entirely material either. The quality of light present here is one this project returns to again and again. It is a light that does not wax or wane, that is already present before you recognize it, and that once seen, cannot be unseen.
