The Reflection Card
Medium: Originally Gouache on Cardstock, Printed and Foiled
Date: 2022
Project/Body of Work: Mayura Oracle Deck
A card divided into two halves by a horizon line. Above, a deep blue sky scattered with white stars. A large gold circle (the sun) overlaps a white crescent (the moon), neither dominant. Concentric gold arcs radiate outward. Below, the same scene reflected in still water.
The card addresses the relationship between complementary solar and lunar energies—masculine and feminine, doing and being, conscious and unconscious. Both halves of the card hold the same balance and contain the same relationship.
Process Notes:
This card emerged during the vision card class as a response to the prompt "mental health." Rather than depicting health as a state, the card explores it as a relationship, the capacity to hold two seemingly opposite energies in active dialogue.
On the back of the original sketch, I wrote: "The balance of lunar and solar; Carl Jung, the conscious and the unconscious."
Like the other cards in this series, the painting was executed in gouache on cardstock with intentional color choices, the deep blue chosen as background, the gold and white reflecting relationship between the energies themselves. The original gouache card was later adapted into a printed and foiled version as part of the Mayura Oracle deck.
